Andre William Darnaud "Bill," 85, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 8 p.m. He was hospitalized and successfully treated for renal failure, then transitioned to the Hospital's Skilled Nursing Facility to complete his recovery before being sent home. Unfortunately, on the way to the transition facility, a medication was administered to which he suffered a severe allergic reaction, followed by a major stroke. He was immediately returned to the hospital's Emergency Room, then to the ICU, where heroic treatment was provided until he ultimately expired from renal and respiratory failure.
Bill lost his wife, Carolyn Sites-Darnaud, during the previous year (April 27, 2007). Survivors include his daughter and son, Lori Martinez and Michael Andre Brewer of Hayward, California; his stepson, Steve Sites of San Diego, Calif.; his nephews, Ted Darnaud and Jerry Latimer of San Diego, Calif.; and his niece, Yvonne Peternell of Richton Park, Illinois.
Following Bill's departure as a San Diego police officer, he opened his own Investigative Services Agency as a private investigator, retiring from that business in 2005.
In 1990, Bill began to lose his sight to optic atrophy, ultimately leaving him legally blind. He acquired the services of a Guide Dog in 1992, absolutely loved his Golden Retriever Guide Dog, and became a strong supporter of the "Guide Dogs For The Blind, Inc." in San Rafael, California.
Bill was a unique individual who loved life and lived life to the fullest. Everyone who met Bill took an immediate liking to him. He was very much loved by his family and friends, and he will truly be missed by all.
