Belle Janet Tawney passed away at the age of 86 on June 23rd, 2018 in La Mesa, California.  Everyone called her “Benji”.

She was born in Santa Maria, California back on April 18th, 1932 to Edmund and Fredda Herth.  Benji was the 8th of 9 children.  While she was still a small child, the family moved to San Diego where she lived the rest of her life.  She loved San Diego, and she felt like she was part of the best generation.

Benji was a big proponent and philanthropist towards children.  She donated many funds to KPBS, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the San Diego Zoo, among others.  Benji was such a generous and thoughtful woman, dedicated to her family and her work.  She could tell a good joke and loved making people laugh.

Most of Benji’s working years was for the Civil Service, working for the San Diego Police Department and also the Water District in San Diego.

She married Frank A. Tawney, the love of her life, and they made a nice life together.  They loved to travel together (especially Las Vegas) and listening to music, including Jazz and Orchestral music.  One of the cool things she claims is that she met Elvis Presley in Las Vegas back before he hit it big.

Ms. Tawney is survived by her brother, H. Lawrence Herth (wife, Chris); and her nephews and nieces, Lawrence “LB” Herth, Bob Peterson, Lisa Herth, Frannie Cook, and Bill Sinock.
