On November 12, 2003, Officer Daniel Walters was shot and seriously wounded in the line of duty. After languishing in a coma, Officer Walters woke to find Chris in his hospital room staring at him. Officer Walters later discovered Chris had been by his side almost the entire time. Officer Walters was eventually sent home however, finding himself paralyzed, presented serious physical challenges. As insurance worked out the details of home health care, Chris filled in as a live in nurse and companion for Officer Walters.
Officer Walters later stated, “It was a bleak Christmas that year and I wasn’t in the holiday spirit. Chris insisted we have a Christmas. I didn’t want one but he still came to my house and set up a Christmas tree and brought presents. I was on the couch when he came in and did it and I acted like I was asleep but I saw him do it. He just wouldn’t go away. He stayed by my side the entire time.”
Officer Walters recalled Chris helped feed him, bathe him and provide all of the quality of life details that would be needed when assisting someone suffering a debilitating injury.
For Officer Christopher Wilson’s remarkable dedication to a fellow officer, service that went above and beyond any reasonable expectation, he was posthumously awarded the San Diego Police Historical Associations Medal for Merit.
