Medal approved and awarded to San Diego Police Museum as no living surviors could be located.
WE NEVER FORGET
The San Diego Police Historical Association has, through extensive research, identified a number of past members who qualify for medal recognition. Generally, the member performed the deed at a time when a medal did not exist.
It's been our goal to remedy that.
The following individuals are those who we have identified and sucessfully petitioned the San Diego Police Department to award a medal to the surviving members of the family.
Medal For Valor & Purple Heart. Posthumous Award.
Act of Valor date 09/26/1937. Nominated by the San Diego Police Historical Association in 2020.
Medal approved and awarded to direct family members by Chief of Police David Nisleit, San Diego Police Department.
Purple Heart. Posthumous Award.
Act of Valor date 06/15/1935. Nominated by the San Diego Police Historical Association in 2022.
Medal approved and awarded to direct family members by Chief of Police David Nisleit, San Diego Police Department.
Police Cross. Posthumous Award.
End of Watch 10/07/1971. Presented in 2024.
The Police Cross Medal was created in 2016 to recognize members who were killed either on duty or in duty related circumstances.
In 2022 the San Diego Police Historical Association was provided with 8 Police Cross medals. Despite best efforts of the police department the medals
were for families would could not be located. After extensive research the Association located the brothers of Sergeant Edwards. On August 7, 2024, the Edwards family were on hand at San Diego Police Headquarters to be presented the Police Cross by Chief Scott Wahl.

were for families would could not be located. After extensive research the Association located the sister of Officer Tonahill. In early 2024, she was presnted the Police Cross at San Diego Police Museum by Sergeant Gary E. Mitrovich, the surviving officer of the Grape Street Park incident.
