Dr. J.T. Lipe, former chief of staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital and a resident of La Jolla for more than 50 years, died Wednesday in his home at the age of 83.

A native of Dardanelle, Ark., Dr. Lipe was a 1930 graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He earned his medical degree in 1933 from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine and completed his surgical training at the University of Rochester.

Married in 1932, Dr. Lipe moved to San Diego with his family in 1936. He practiced general medicine and surgery in North County and served as chief of staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital for several years. He later gave up general practice and went into anesthesiology until retiring in 1958.

Dr. Everette M. Rogers, a former colleague, said, "I practiced with Dr. Lipe after coming to the community in 1952 and his guidance was extremely helpful to me during my 37 years in practice. I felt that he embodied the best in medicine and in public service."

An avid golfer, Dr. Lipe was a member of the La Jolla Country Club and had been active with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a founding director of La Jolla Federal Savings and Loan, now Glendale Federal, and was past president of the La Jolla Kiwanis Club. Dr. Lipe also served on the board of Gillespie Cottage, a forerunner of Scripps Memorial Hospital.

His wife of 58 years, Georgeanna, is a well-known landscape watercolor artist and acrylic painter. During the Depression era, she worked as a medical illustrator to help support the family while Dr. Lipe completed his education.

Dr. and Mrs. Lipe were also active supporters of the American Field Service, an international student exchange program. Some of the students who stayed with the Lipes while studying in San Diego have kept in close touch with the family, "almost like adopted daughters," said Steele Lipe, their son.

Services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in La Jolla Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Dr. Steele Lipe of Sacramento; two daughters, Terry Jordan of Granada Hills, Calif., and Susanna Smith of McLean, Va.; and seven grandchildren.Dr. J.T.
