Merlin W. Murphy had been a San Diego policeman 20 years when he retired from the department in 1960. He moved in 1979 to Largo, Fla., where he died Monday.  He was 72.

Mr. Murphy, born in Seattle, came to San Diego as a child, growing up in the area of 22nd and Market streets, where his father ran a grocery store. 

He served in the Army during World War II.

When Mr. Murphy left the Police Department he was detective with the juvenile bureau.  He had been a motorcycle patrolman.  After retiring, he was in the furniture business, Murphy Furniture Store, with his brother, Paul.

He is survived by two daughters, Sally McCannon, of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; and Carole Ann Black, of Largo, Fla.; his brother; and four grandchildren.
