The Northwestern Division serves the neighborhoods of Sorrento Valley, Torrey Preserve, Del Mar Heights, Carmel Valley, North City, Torrey Highlands and Black Mountain Ranch. Northwestern Division serves a population of 70,822 and encompasses an area of 41.6 square miles.

The facility is a 22,000-square-foot police station with a 5,500-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility set on six acres.

Its design is unique to SDPD stations. The architects sought to design a police station that would not appear institutional, contrasting displeasingly to the mostly residential context. To accomplish this, they designed the building to run parallel to the street to conceal the rear parking lot and vehicle maintenance facility.

An eight-foot-high protective concrete wall was required for the building, so a central atrium was created to allow natural daylight into the structure. This natural lighting scheme and other sustainable features, such as photovoltaic power, contributed to the project’s LEED Silver certification.
