RUMSEY -- William Joseph, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997 at Wesley Woods Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He was 89.
Mr. Rumsey was a retired captain of the San Diego County Life Guards, which he helped organize. After his retirement, Mr. Rumsey lived aboard his boat and sailed on the west and east coast of the US, including a voyage to Hawaii. He is survived by wife Marian Rumsey and sons Thomas Walker Rumsey and William John Rumsey.
His ashes will be buried at sea at a later date.
He owned and operated the Atlantic Electric Co. an electrical contracting firm in Solana Beach from 1952 till his retirement in 1969.
He was a WW II Navy veteran serving in both the Pacific and Atlantic. On June 10, 1943 while serving on board the USS PC 487, a sub chaser, the ship encountered, rammed, and sank a Japanese submarine near Attu Island in the Aleutian chain. Although badly damaged, the crew brought the ship back to Dutch Harbor. He also served on the USS Pinon, a net tender, cleaning mines out of Cherbourg Harbor, France.
Active until his death, he started an electrical supply business in 1976 and later sold it in 1986. He built and operated a health club at Big Bear Lake in the late 1980's. He remained an avid handball player, playing at the Oceanside Family Fitness Center.
